Animal Planet is highlighting a number of individuals who rescue animals on "Hero of the Year".
Read below to learn about a woman who has exchanged all of her personal possessions for the betterment of bats and the planet.
Please [vote] for her - it takes a few seconds to click through (her listing is at the bottom of the poll. Not too hard to figure out--she's the only one holding a bat).
Obviously every sanctuary deserves support, but the ones that focus on the conventional cute furry ones will get plenty of votes. Bats are misunderstood by most, but in this scene, most of us has a more sympathetic disposition towards them. So help her out by casting your vote!

We did it! YOU did it!!!!!! Out of thousands of entrants, Amanda Lollar, founder and President of Bat World Sanctuary is one of the 10 finalists selected to
be Hero of the Year. Although some great people have been nominated, there truly is no one more deserving than Amanda. She works 24/7 365 days a year to make
certain all bats, worldwide, get the help and attention they need and find safety from cruelty and abuse. Amanda liquidated her furniture business in order to
turn the building into an indoor sanctuary, then sold everything she owned to get Bat World Sanctuary on its feet.
She moved into an upper loft in the back of the sanctuary, and has worked without pay for the past 15 years to keep the organization going.
Additionally, Amanda also maintains Bat World's wild sanctuary , sweeping 200 pounds of guano a week in in over 100 degree heat in the summer. She also devotes her waking hours caring for over 150 permanent residents of Bat World and over 30,000 wild bats from our wild sanctuary. Amanda also rescues homeless and abused dogs and cats, and helped to establish Nick of Time Rescue in rural GA, a shelter that saves dogs and cats that are destined for the gas chamber.
Many good people help animals, but this is our chance to bring attention to the plight of the most misunderstood animal on the face of the earth. Amanda seeks no fame from this but Bat World Sanctuary NEEDS the $10,000 prize plus the $1,000 the nominator (Dottie Hyatt) will give to Bat World. If she wins Amanda will NOT take the trip that is valued at $15,000 but will instead auction it off on e-bay to earn even more money NOT FOR HERSELF but for Bat World.
In a world where Mother Nature has been abused to the point of collapse, in a time when it is critical to be "green", please remember that there
is nothing greener than a bat. For those of you in the bat community, supporters of bats CONGRATULATIONS because this is your victory as well.
Please vote now as People's Choice voting ends at 11:59 PM ET October 13, 2008

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Dottie Hyatt, Vice President
